The Norbertine Premonstratensian canons, like monks, live in community and according to certain rules. However, the canons have a very open mind and enjoy interacting with the people around them. Therefore, it is not surprising that, since the founding of the abbey, the Norbertines have been known for the special attention they have given to welcoming guests and pilgrims.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e The numerous pilgrims who passed by the abbey always found the door open… but not only that.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n \u003cp\u003eThe canons began brewing beer in Leffe in 1240. Guests and travelers could quench their thirst with a healthy and refreshing drink. It was, in fact, a difficult period: the numerous epidemics that plagued European territory at that time made drinking water unfit for consumption. Fortunately, an ideal solution emerged: brewing beer. During the fermentation process, the boiling temperature killed the microbes, making the beer safe to drink. Water quality has improved greatly over the centuries, but beer production remains a tradition, even for the Norbertines of Leffe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n \u003cp\u003eFollowing the events of the French Revolution, religious life was paralyzed for a time. This also applies to Leffe Abbey, which was destroyed several times in the early 18th century. In 1902, the abbey temporarily returned to the hands of the Norbertine canons of France. They rebuilt the church and the abbey. In 1929, Tongerlo Abbey was destroyed by fire, so the clergy of Campine were housed in Leffe Abbey. After the reconstruction of Tongerlo Abbey, it was decided that some of the canons would reside permanently in Leffe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e In 1952, Father Abbot Nys and brewer Albert Lootvoet decided to revive the Abbey's brewing tradition.
