Description

Herdade dos Muachos is a property located in the parish of Urra, municipality of Portalegre, acquired in 1995 by José Carvalho Sociedade Agrícola Lda, a family company owning around 2000 ha, developing its activity in the areas of cattle farming, sheep farming, cereals and winemaking.

This last activity continued until 2002, selling the grapes produced to winemakers in the region. However, given the quality of the grapes produced from 20 ha of vines aged around 30 years, it was decided to increase the winemaking area by building, at Herdade dos Muachos, a new wine cellar, with capacity for the annual production of 800,000 liters of wine, where an underground cellar allows the storage and aging of around 350 barrels of 250 liters.

As a consequence and to balance the overall project, 12 ha of vineyards were established in 2002, and in 2005 another 18 ha, thus reaching a total of 50 ha at Herdade dos Muachos. In 2008, José Carvalho Sociedade Agrícola, Lda, acquired a farm called Quinta do Seixo, with a further 9 ha of vineyards, currently having around 100 ha of vineyards with the leased vineyard areas.

The Portalegre area, a wine producer since ancient times and renowned since the Middle Ages for the quality of the wines produced, is the birthplace for these wines.
