Quinta do Vale Meão Red 2020 75cl

270,00

Grapes: 60% Touriga Nacional, 35% Touriga Franca, 3% Tinta Barroca, 2% Tinta Roriz

Several heat waves in June and July further reduced production, which fell by 40 %, compared to the average of recent years. Touriga Franca mainly contributed to this decrease, as it was the variety that suffered the most from the consequences of the extreme phenomena mentioned. The harvest was much shorter than normal and began on August 18th, with the white grape varieties Rabigato and Arinto. The red varieties were then quickly harvested, finishing the harvest in the third week of September.

Aging in 225-liter French oak barrels (45% new and 55% second year).

Excellent color, vivid and deep. Floral aromas combined with red and wild fruits. Intense fruit notes, showing a very fresh and complex long aftertaste.

Description

In 1877 D. Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, already owner of the largest agricultural heritage in the Douro, purchased 300 hectares of virgin land at public auction from the VN de Foz Côa council. Her dream was to build a model farm from scratch, implementing in it all the vast experience accumulated throughout her life as a Douro businesswoman.

This ambitious project was fully carried out between 1887 and 1895. It was the last and most significant achievement of that Lady, who however enjoyed little of it, as she died in 1896.

Since then, the farm has always remained in the possession of his descendants. From the 1970s onwards, his great-great-grandson Francisco Javier de Olazabal took over its management and began a long process of acquiring undivided shares from his family and co-owners, and in 1994 he became, together with his children, the sole owner of the Quinta.
Until then, the Quinta's grapes were sold to the company AA Ferreira SA, founded by the descendants of D. Antónia, and were the basis of some of its best wines.
This connection continued until 1998, the year in which Francisco Javier de Olazabal decided to resign as president of AA, Ferreira SA to dedicate himself, together with his winemaker son Francisco de Olazabal y Nicolau de Almeida, to the production, aging and marketing of the farm's wines. , through the creation of the company F. Olazabal & Filhos, Lda.

Today Francisco, Luísa and Jaime are linked to the management of the company, each in their own role, and share the same passion for wine. From one harvest to the next, they respect tradition and keep an open mind to innovation. The entire Olazabal family expresses their enthusiasm and contributes to perpetuating D. Antónia's project of making Quinta do Vale Meão a model Quinta in its own time.
