Description
João Póvoa began producing branded wines in 1991 with Quinta de Baixo, being the first individual producer of reference in the municipality of Cantanhede.
Since 2005, the company has been called Kompassus, and it still has a wine production philosophy based on family roots and traditions. It is dedicated to the production of excellent wines supported by production methods and minimal intervention viticulture practices. The company is owned by João Póvoa, an ophthalmologist by profession, but a farmer by genetics. His enthusiasm for wine began when he was just 8 years old, and he immediately became involved in the Bairrada terroir and this in his life – the soil, the climate and its grape varieties. Baga, as the dominant grape variety, made him fall in love with what was immediately the basis for all his red and sparkling wines. Most of the grapes still come from old vines over 70 years old. They are essentially wines from small productions, in practice there are 30 years of dedication to the production of branded wines. His family already produced wines in Bairrada, and it was with his mother and father that João Póvoa learned the first secrets of this region and developed a passion that followed him throughout his life. Over the years, extraordinary wines have arrived on the market, today true relics, wines that display finesse, refinement, concentration and depth. Those that cause real pleasure. And for these attributes, multiple recognitions and important distinctions of merit have been achieved since 1991.
