Description

Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that, at first, was dedicated to selling fine Douro wines and liqueurs. It is today the oldest family business still operating in the municipality of Anadia.

In the 1930s, with the ban on the production of Port wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, the Company began to sell table wines from Bairrada. At that time, the production of natural sparkling wines also began, using the “champagne” method, with emphasis, at this stage, on the important role of French winemaker Gaston Mennesson.

The export of wines to the Brazilian market began and, shortly afterwards, to the Portuguese colonies in Africa. At the end of the 1950s, one of the most famous wine brands in the Bairrada region was born – “Frei João” – and, a little later, a brand from the demarcated region of Dão, “Porta dos Cavaleiros”.

With the name “Reserva”, initiated by Caves São João, this innovates in the wine market, using paper labels covered with natural cork.

Caves São João acquires Quinta do Poço do Lobo, a rustic property with approximately 37 hectares, located in the small town of Pocariça in the municipality of Cantanhede. The Quinta was then completely replanted with selected grape varieties and strictly divided.

With the grapes harvested there, the company began producing the wine “Quinta do Poço do Lobo – Bairrada”, a Bairrada Red with grapes from the Baga, Moreto and Castelão varieties; “Quinta do Poço do Lobo – Cabernet Sauvignon”, a varietal wine from the most prestigious grape variety in the world; a white wine made with the Arinto grape variety and “Espumante Quinta do Poço do Lobo”, a sparkling wine with grapes from the Arinto and Chardonnay grape varieties.

Nowadays, and after some investments in the area of winemaking and quality control, Caves São João are prepared to face future challenges in terms of production, always with the concern of following the evolution of markets and tastes. of increasingly demanding and attentive consumers.
