Description
Quinta da Família Kelman is located in Nelas, in the heart of the Dão region. It is in this city square that the Dão wine fair takes place in September of each year. It also houses the Dão Wine Studies Center, famous for the longevity of its wines.
The vineyard has 6 hectares that were planted in 2000 with traditional grape varieties, of which Touriga Nacional represents around 50%. More recently, 1.5 hectares of old vines were incorporated into the property. The average altitude is 430 meters. The gentle slope and sandy soil (decomposed granite) provide good drainage. Precipitation is 900 mm/year, mainly concentrated in winter. Temperatures range from near freezing in winter to 30 degrees Celsius or more during summer. The range of daytime temperatures is high (days can be hot, but nights are always cool). The conditions are ideal for the gradual ripening of the grapes and the freshness of the wines.
From the vineyard it is possible to distinguish the Caramulo mountain range and the village of Vilar Seco. The vineyard is 20 km from Viseu, 90 km from Coimbra, 120 km from Porto and 280 km from Lisbon. Access can be done by car or train (Lisbon-Nelas route).
