Description

Couquinho, the wine that in the local language of Alto Douro means “a place difficult to access”, has been produced on a farm belonging to the Melo Trigo family for more than two centuries.
Many of the farms that once belonged to the family are, as well as Quinta do Couquinho, located in the Vilariça Valley where local legends and stories appear interconnected with the family.

Douro women have traditionally assumed a more prominent role in managing family businesses than in other areas of the country and the Melo Trigo family is no exception. In the history of the family, women have been at the helm several times and continued the family traditions. Maria Adelaide Melo e Trigo, together with two of her brothers, is the owner and entrepreneur behind Quinta do Couquinho and her decision was made to take advantage of the Douro's exceptional climate to maximize the farm's wine and olive oil production. In the past, the farm's grapes were sold to large Port wine producing houses but, at the end of the nineties, Maria Adelaide decided to capitalize on the quality of the harvest to start bottling her own wine.

The first harvest was bottled and sold by Lavradores de Feitoria, an association of small and medium-sized Duriense producers of which Quinta do Couquinho was a founding member. Eventually, in 2002, the decision was made to bottle it under its own brand under the name Quinta do Couquinho.
As the project has grown, Maria Adelaide has been able to count on the help of her brothers Nelson and Eduardo, as well as a team of dedicated workers and the acclaimed Duriense winemaker João Brito e Cunha, to manage and maintain the quality of the farm's products. .

Quinta do Couquinho has around 70 hectares, 60 of which are under cultivation. Vineyards and olive groves occupy most of the cultivated land, with the remainder filled with almond trees, orange trees, fig trees, apple trees and other fruit trees. Located in the Superior Douro part of the Douro Demarcated Region, the farm borders the Alto Douro Wine Region declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001.
