Description

Founded in 1954 by a group of 100 winegrowers, Adega de Cantanhede today has 500 active associated winegrowers and an annual production of 6 to 7 million kilos of grapes, becoming the main producer in the Bairrada Demarcated Region, representing around of 40% of the region's overall production. Today it certifies around 80% of its production, being a clear leader in sales of DOC Bairrada DOC and Beira Atlântico IGP wines.

Recognizing the enormous competitiveness that exists in the national and international market, the qualitative evolution of its wines is the result of the most modern technology, with a focus on quality and food safety (Certified Winery by ISO 9001:2015, and more recently by IFS Food 6.1. ), but also the promotion of Portuguese grape varieties, which has always guided its strategy, particularly the traditional Bairrada varieties – Baga, Bical and Maria Gomes – but also other Portuguese varieties that find a Terroir of choice, such as Touriga Nacional, Aragonez and Arinto, as it believes in the unequivocal potential for differentiation and uniqueness that this heritage gives to its wines.

Its portfolio includes a wide range of products. In red, white and rose, its wines range from table wines to premium wines, in addition to a wide range of sparkling wines produced exclusively using the Classic Method, as well as brandies and fortified wines. It is a portfolio that, thanks to its diversity and versatility, is capable of serving different market segments, with different degrees of quality requirements, which results in the presence of its products in more than 20 markets.

Its notoriety as a producer, as well as that of its wines and brands, has been confirmed and sustainably reinforced by the awards it has accumulated in its catalogue, which results in more than 750 distinctions awarded in the most prestigious national and international competitions, with emphasis on for Mundus Vini – Germany, Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, Selections Mondiales du Vins – Canada, Effervescents du Monde – France, Berliner Wein Trophy – Germany and Japan Wine Challenge. being on several occasions the only producer in Bairrada with wines awarded in these competitions and, therefore, today one of the most awarded producers in the region.

In 2015, he was included in the TOP 100 of the Best World Producers, by WAWWJ – World Association of Wine and Spirits Journalists and Critics.

In the last 8 years it has been elected “Best Cooperative Winery” in Portugal 3 times by the specialty press:

– February 2012 – “Best Cooperative Winery of the Year 2011” by “Revista de Vinhos”.

– January 2017 – “Best Cooperative Winery” in the Special Awards of the 10th Anniversary Gala of “Passion for Wine” magazine.

– February 2020 – “Best Cooperative Winery of the Year 2019” by “Vinho – Grandes Escolhas” magazine.

In 2014, it was considered “Best Sparkling Wine Producer 2013” by the W Awards, by Aníbal Coutinho.

Osvaldo Amado has been its Chief Winemaker since 2011. His career began in 1987, and today he has accumulated extensive professional experience in the most emblematic Portuguese wine regions, with emphasis on Bairrada, Dão, Douro and Verdes, Tagus and Lisbon, but also international level, in Spain, Italy, South Africa and Brazil. With more than 600 million bottles produced, he has already been elected “Best Winemaker” 6 times by the specialty press and sector institutions, and his wines have already been awarded with more than 1100 Gold and Silver medals in the most prestigious national and international competitions.
