Description

Kopke's journey is intertwined with the history of its place. The Douro was destined to be the amphitheater chosen for this union between the will of man and nature.
In 1636, a journey took place between Hamburg and Portugal that would prove to be the root of a long story: Nicolau Köpke arrived in his new country as Consul General of the Hanseatic Cities.
Two years later, in 1638, he signed the first bottles of wine sent to Northern Europe.
The purchase of a farm in Douro, in 1781, marks the transition from a purchasing company to a large wine producer.
Port Wines are gaining importance in the company, quickly becoming the main business. Nicolau Kopke & Co. becomes an example of innovation, integrating wine production and trade in the same company.
In 1828, Cristiano Nicolau Kopkë, great-great-grandson of the company's founder, Nicolau Kopkë, and grandson of Cristiano Kopke, sided with the Liberal Party during the civil war, thus linking the company and the family to the cause.
This dedication to the concept of social progress will be shared by all successive generations of the family.
In 1836, Cristiano Nicolau Kopke was awarded the title of Baron of Vilar. 10 years later, his nephew Joaquim Augusto Kopke receives the title of Baron of Massarelos.
Two centuries after the family's arrival in Portugal, their commitment to the country's development was rewarded.
The firm takes the name CN Kopke.
The Kopke in 1841 remains as such today.
The purchase of Quinta de S. Luiz in 1922, almost three centuries after its creation, is like Kopke arriving home.
This property, which has always been the choice of great connoisseurs of the Douro and Port Wine, has been desired for a long time. It becomes the focus, the model and the jewel of all Kopke wine production.
In 1940, the certificate from the Commercial and Industrial Association of Portugal was signed, recognizing the antiquity of CN Kopke to 1638.
