Description

The vineyards at Quinta da Carregosa extend over a schist slope of around 40 hectares. The slopes of the Quinta benefit from a privileged sun exposure (south/east), which rise to an altitude between 200 and 500 meters above sea level.

Knowledge of each plot of Quinta da Carregosa, knowing the qualitative excellence of the intended grapes, leads Manuel Costa and João Silva to impose, over the last few years, viticulture practices based on principles of sustainability in integrated production methods, respecting and protecting the biodiversity and the farm’s ecosystem.

Vinha do Reiro – Quinta da Carregosa has a vineyard with pre-phylloxera characteristics. This extends along small stone walls extracted from the land, oriented according to the curves that support a row of vines with a very low plant density.

Vinha das Corigas – The post-phylloxera vineyard installed at the end of the slope consists of wider terraces supported by stone walls. The planting of vines is done according to contour lines, which makes mechanization impossible. More than 15 different grape varieties native to the Douro region are planted in this vineyard.

All viticulture work carried out in these old vineyards, throughout the year, is carried out manually, using ancient viticulture techniques, such as soil mobilization, which is done using horses. Annual grape production is incredibly low, not exceeding 0.7 kg/vine.
