Caves da Cerca was founded in the early 20th century as a personal project of Albano de Carvalho Sardoeira, owner of several vineyard plots in the municipality of Amarante. Trained in physical and chemical sciences, he decided to produce the wine resulting from his farms, building a small winery on his property where he owned an 18th-century house – Casa da Cerca. In 1946 he registered the trademark of the same name, which he adopted for the winery and which later inspired the company's corporate name.

Their wines and brandies from “Casa da Cerca” quickly gained prestige and notoriety, winning awards at local, national, and even international exhibitions and fairs. With the success of their products, they began to increase production capacity through the expansion of the winery. Needing more financial resources for the accelerated development of the business, in 1957 they sought support and that year the company “Caves da Cerca” was formally established, with the founder and the partners of the company “Mota e Companhia” as the main partners. Over the years, the company's structure underwent some changes, but maintained the family character that was present at its origin.

Since its founding, the company has developed through the production of quality Vinho Verde wines and has also gained prestige for its brands of aged brandy.

In 2002, Caves da Cerca began a project in São João da Pesqueira (Douro Demarcated Region) aimed at producing DOC Douro wines and also Port wine. As part of this project, they built a new winery at “Quinta do Cercal” and also acquired some grape-producing properties in the municipalities of Sabrosa and Tabuaço.
