Alexandre de Almeida, founder of the hotel chain of the same name, the oldest in Portugal, created Vinhos do Bussaco in 1917. After numerous trips to European hotels, particularly those on the French Riviera, he grasped the concept of a hotel wine cellar. He then adopted the idea of creating his own winery at the Palace Bussaco, beginning the vinification of what would become the glorious "Bussaco wines".

At the beginning of the 20th century, one of the most interesting chapters in Portuguese wine history began. It was the birth of a wine that would become an icon, an object of desire, but which was always intentionally kept out of the limelight. Its creator, Alexandre de Almeida, adopted the concept of combining luxury hotels with a winery producing its own wine. Looking back to its first harvests, we realize the importance of this icon, which was served to kings, queens, and heads of state, as evidenced by the menus proudly kept at the Hotel Palace Bussaco. The wines of Bussaco were indeed objects of worship, limited to very restricted circles, to the elite. Their fantastic and noble labels still maintain the symbol of their nobility today.
