Founded in 1889, the Royal Wine Company of Northern Portugal, known colloquially as the "Royal Wine Company," generated considerable confusion upon its creation between the two Royal Companies: the new one and the old Royal Company of Port Wines. It was through popular usage and commercial jargon that the Pombaline Royal Company, founded in 1756, began to be known as the "Old Royal Company" and to use this designation as a trademark.
The century-old Real Vinícola, created under the auspices of the Marquis of Pombal, became over the years a purely patrimonial company, being acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor's.
