It is in Velho Sobral that Cristina Simões, daughter of the company's founder, grows up alongside her grandparents, where she learns the art of the land, where she plays, and above all, where she discovers love—a love that continues to overflow with pride from her lips and her heart—the love for Santar.
His dream begins with sacrifice, in the year 1997, a sacrifice that is only palpable by listening to the stories that Old Nelson has to offer us on an afternoon by his side, stories of vision, risk, love and reward.
Beginning the annexation of land to his old Sobral estate, he also started the reconstitution of old vineyards with new plantings and built his winery in the year 2000, constantly evolving the technology and space at his service, with the investment in it allowing him to encompass in a single complex the winemaking area, aging cellars, laboratories, bottling line, visitor area, restaurant for events, tasting rooms, offices and, of course, a shop with all the products of the House.
All this in a space where granite walls, ancient tunnels and iron gates, combined with a stunning landscape, give it the character, tradition and eloquence it deserves.
Quinta do Sobral currently has 15 hectares of vineyards in production and more than 20 hectares of forest, which are fundamental to the terroir of Dão wine.
Returning to the sacrifices and betting on this project, Cristina Simões, a teacher by profession, and Jorge Loureiro, a hotel manager of a 5-star complex in England, are a passionate couple with shared ideas. They embrace Nelson Simões' project and, realizing their dream, leave behind their perfectly established careers, supported by family, love, and the belief of their father and father-in-law respectively, dedicating themselves exclusively to the Fazenda Sobral project.
This entry into the project gives it a new direction and impetus, immediately seeking to position Quinta do Sobral as a benchmark brand in the national wine scene, with the incorporation of know-how, new agricultural management methods and a keen attention to the commercial area.
This brings us to a turning point at Quinta do Sobral, and don't think it was the arrival of Cristina and Jorge to the project; no, it was precisely the arrival into the world of their most precious child, Maria, their daughter, granddaughter, and the soul of Quinta do Sobral.
These words might sound exuberant and overly sentimental, but once again, proof that his arrival is not just due to the immense love he enjoys, is the fact that the project, conceived 20 years ago, is now being considered 50 years ago – a paradigm shift.
This change is fundamental to all current decision-making processes that involve...
With a focus on the future, the Simões family knows today that their work, both past and present, will continue with their granddaughter, Maria, who at the age of 4 forbade her grandfather from uprooting some small, old vines to plant new ones, taking possession of them. Today, these vines are the stage for the production of Quinta do Sobral's most awarded and prestigious wine, Vinha da Neta, of course.
This family is proof that entrepreneurship requires a great deal of personal sacrifice for the common good; it's proof that love truly breaks down barriers; it's proof that it's possible to live today with tomorrow in mind, even knowing we won't be there; it's proof that believing takes work, but also immense pride; it's proof that it's worthwhile to evolve, learn, and share; ultimately, this family is proof that success and humility can go hand in hand.
And finally, as it couldn't be otherwise, we will continue undertaking new projects, and new ones are on the horizon, but these, of course, will be announced by Maria Simões, the granddaughter.
