The farm is called "dos Poços" (of the Wells) because when there is heavy rainfall in the region, multiple springs of water emerge from its soil. It has also been suggested that its name is due to the fact that it is opposite point 130 or "Ponto das Poças" (Point of the Wells) described by Baron Forrester in his map "O Douro Portuguez e Paiz Adjacente" (The Portuguese Douro and Adjacent Country), in 1848.
Quinta dos Poços is located in the Douro Demarcated Region's World Heritage area, in the Baixo Corgo area, in the village of Valdigem, Lamego municipality. It is one of the oldest in the region, with the main house being a typical 18th-century rural manor house. French troops under Brigadier General Loison, "the One-Handed," were stationed there during the first Napoleonic invasion in 1808.
The farm belongs to the family of Professor José Manuel da Costa Mesquita Guimarães.
