The wines from the upper Alenquer region have been mentioned in various writings throughout the centuries for their quality and for being chosen to serve the Portuguese Royal House and other distinguished households. However, it was in the 19th century that Camilo Castelo Branco, in his book "The Regicide's Daughter," page 131, refers to: "...and going out through the windmills, through the Anunciada valley to Andaluzes, that's what's beautiful, especially if a man cast his line in the squinty-eyed man's tavern and, with two sheep's hands, finishes off two good gulps of Labrugeira wine."

This proves that Labrugeira wines have always been known and appreciated. However, it was in 1973 that a group of 85 winegrowers from the upper part of the Alenquer municipality, in the village of Labrugeira, joined together and organized themselves into a single winery – the Labrugeira Cooperative Winery. This was a major step towards maximizing the high quality of the grapes for the production of great wines in the region. Gradually, new members joined, with vineyards located in the northern part of the Alenquer municipality, on the southern and western slopes of the Montejunto mountain range, with an area of influence covering the parishes of Ventosa, Olhalvo, Cabanas de Torres, Abrigada and Vila Verde dos Francos.

This region of mid-slopes, with clay-limestone soils and protected from the maritime climate of the western coastal area by the mountains that follow Vila Verde dos Francos and Serra de S. Julião, produces great red and white wines with good structure and above-average alcohol content. Since its foundation, the winery has received hundreds of national and international awards and distinctions, notably in 1990 when it was awarded 1st Prize in the National Wine Competition of the National Wine Board, with its 1990 vintage red wine, a competition that awarded only three red and three white wines nationally. Since then, the winery has received hundreds of gold, silver and bronze medals in national and international competitions, including the Lisbon Wine Competition, the Crédito Agrícola Competition, the National Wine Festival Competition and the Viniportugal Competitions. In 2020, it received a gold medal in France at the Vinalies Internationales-"Concours des Enologues de France" with the "Velharia" Reserva 2014 wine.

Currently, Adega da Labrugeira markets a wide range of bottled and packaged wines, including white, red, rosé, light wines, pomace brandies, and sparkling wine, with the Regional Lisbon (IGP) and DOP Alenquer certifications. It distributes in the Portuguese and European markets and exports to third countries. Its annual production is approximately 4 million liters.
