In 1982, José Carlos Calheiros Cruz, from a family of winegrowers in the Douro region, revived the family tradition and built a modern winemaking center in Régua, in the Douro Demarcated Region. In 1985, he ventured into bottled wine production with the ambition of leaving his mark on the wine market and bringing the Douro to the world.
In 2001, with the support of renowned winemaker Anselmo Mendes, their work began to gain international recognition, and Adega Calheiros Cruz was named "Winery of the Year" by the American magazine "Wine & Spirits".
With the death of her husband José Carlos in 2002, Madalena Calheiros Cruz took over the leadership of the company, continuing her husband's passion and working with the same values and objectives.
