CASA DA SENRA wine is produced by Quinta dos Abrigueiros in the Lima river valley, in northern Portugal, between the towns of Ponte de Lima and Arcos de Valdevez.
In the 17th century, the Lord of the House of Senra, Tristão de Azevedo de Araújo “Leonês”, was already producing this wine on his lands. It was exported through the port of Viana do Castelo to the countries of Northern Europe. Part of these lands is the Quinta dos Abrigueiros estate.
Today, the 10th generation, led by Paulo Pimenta de Castro Damásio, has expanded the vineyard planting using the single cordon training system, choosing the native queen grape variety of the sub-region – Loureiro.
Although now widely planted in the Vinho Verde region, the Loureiro grape variety appears to originate from the Lima Valley, and it is clearly there that its characteristics are best expressed.
“Loureiro” means “laurel,” which refers to the golden color and the laurel leaves that exude a special fragrance. In classical antiquity, the “laurel wreath” symbolized glory and distinction, which perfectly matches the characteristics of the grape variety!
Quinta dos Abrigueiros has been increasing production over the years, as well as investing in improving new winemaking technologies. This is done in its own winery, where the aim is to enhance the freshness and aroma of the wine must, resulting in a wine with a fruity aroma and fresh taste typical of the Loureiro grape variety.
