Region Alentejo

Herdade do Esporão is located in the Alentejo region, in the sub-region of Reguengos de Monsaraz. With a total area of 1840 hectares and geographical boundaries unchanged since 1267, it offers unique agricultural conditions - large temperature variations, seven different soil types and extraordinary biodiversity.

The Herdade do Esporão estate encompasses almost 1000 hectares of forested area, predominantly covered by cork oak woodlands with many holm oaks and some cork oaks, thickets of rockrose and rosemary, and meadows that vary in color according to the season. The riparian vegetation, which varies between ash and oleander thickets and open areas of willows and reeds, is mostly located along the course of the Ribeira da Caridade stream and the western boundaries marked by the Degebe River – the two watercourses that give life to the estate and sustain its production. There are also areas of stone pine plantations that are in the process of reconversion/restoration to mixed cerrado vegetation.

These forest ecosystems represent the estate's natural legacy and are home to charismatic species such as the black stork, the hare, or the fox that roam there. The rich flora, which varies in composition with the seasons, is evident in much of what Esporão represents, such as the olfactory notes of rosemary in the honey it produces, in the leaves, fruits, and roots that frequently jump from the field to the restaurant 's menus, or even in the wild orchids that appear at the end of winter, born under the shelter of the holm oaks in the wooded area and near the streams.

At the heart of the farm lies the 120-hectare reservoir area, which serves the purpose of water storage. This reservoir is carefully managed using intelligent systems to control water quality and intensity of use. In addition, it moderates the local climate and acts as a biodiversity refuge within the water body and along the marshy banks and in secluded areas adorned with riparian vegetation.

This ecosystem, born from the irrigation needs of the vineyards, is today a semi-natural sanctuary, where around 90% of the birds in the entire Alentejo region have been sighted, in addition to being a permanent residence for ducks, grebes, moorhens, otters, among other species.
