It was from the Douro River, on a boat trip, that the patriarch of the Cardoso Family first sighted the property he would come to call his own: Quinta do Reguengo, in Pocinho (Vila Nova de Foz Côa).
While the beauty of the World Heritage Region enchanted the family, it was their desire and vision to create excellent wines that led them to stay, since 2018, to breathe new life into the "reguengo" (royal estate) that once belonged to Queen Amélia.
The rehabilitation of the winery and wine presses, as well as the restructuring of the vineyard, are already materializing in new wine references that honor the history and profile of the region.
Located in the Douro Superior sub-region, Quinta do Reguengo is situated within the Vilariça tectonic fault, where clay-schist soils with granite outcrops combine with a unique microclimate, benefiting from the warm, humid winds of the river valley and the cooler winds from Spain.
This exceptional natural ecosystem for the production of complex and balanced wines also benefits from a great diversity of altitudes (up to 300 meters), sun exposure, and grape varieties.
The producer's 200 hectares of land extend across two locations that merge under the Quinta do Reguengo banner: the Quinta itself, surrounded by the Douro River, and also Vale da Pia, a property with a higher altitude and greater extent, where a complex vineyard recovery and renewal project was carried out.
A dozen grape varieties – most notably Touriga Nacional and Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz, Gouveio or Viosinho – find ideal settings in these two properties to reach their full potential.
