João José le Cocq acquired Quinta do Prado (Castelo de Vide, Serra de São Mamede) in 1837, and there are records of wine and sparkling wine production at that location since at least 1851. "...and the first Portuguese wine of the Champagne type was drunk with delight (...) it was savored by King Fernando, who, in 1852, sent thanks to the farmer of Prado (...) for some bottles that the illustrious winemaker had sent him as a gift." (João António Gordo, Os Le Cocq em Portugal, 1942). And in another source, "the owner has his cellar well stocked with a sparkling wine very similar to Champagne, known in Lisbon under the special name of Vinho do Prado." (based on a note, 1851, www.castelodevide.pt/turismo)
The Viúva Le Cocq brand now belongs to the producer Altas Quintas, and this sparkling wine has been launched with the historical stamp of that previously produced by the Le Cocq Family. The grapes used for this wine are found in vineyards with a very special terroir: they are located at an altitude of 500 meters, on a plateau that develops in a unique way, in the heart of the Serra de São Mamede.
