MSR Ginja liqueur is known as a hallmark of the region, and is highly appreciated by both national and international visitors to the Monastery of Santa Maria de Alcobaça, a World Heritage site.
MSR Ginja liqueur originated in Alcobaça in the 1920s, created by Manuel de Sousa Ribeiro (1894-1976), whose full name was Manuel de Assis da Silva Daun e Lorena Guimarães Oliveira de Souza Ribeiro. Born in Cedofeita, Porto, into a wealthy and distinguished family, he had a superior cultural and academic education obtained in England. He came to Alcobaça and, it is known that in the 1920s, he worked in the two most important agricultural estates in Alcobaça, in the wine and brandy production sector, becoming a renowned expert in wines, vinegars, and brandies.
With his expertise and in clear defiance of the traditional homemade Ginja liqueurs that proliferated in Alcobaça, originating from the Alcobaça Monastery, he set out to make the best Ginja liqueur, developing a unique manufacturing formula that remains unchanged to this day. This led to the creation of Ginja MSR, whose trademark registration dates back to 1930.
At Casa Agrícola Raposo de Magalhães, Manuel de Sousa Ribeiro met David Pinto (1907-1985), a clerk, who, with a clear vision of the potential and qualities of Ginja Liqueur, acquired the exclusive manufacturing formula from him in the 1930s, founding in 1940 the firm David Pinto & Companhia, Lda., which has been producing MSR Ginja Liqueur ever since.
