The company J. Carranca Redondo, Lda, producer of Licor Beirão, was founded in 1940, but the history of this liqueur is much older. Even without the surname Beirão, the liqueur was already being manufactured in a pharmacy in the town of Lousã more than a century ago.
But the story goes like this: at the end of the 19th century, a traveling salesman of Port wine, passing through Lousã, fell in love with the daughter of a pharmacist, and their courtship ended in marriage. In the pharmacy, in addition to the usual medicines, they sold "natural liqueurs" made according to old, secret formulas. Meanwhile, a law came into effect prohibiting the attribution of medicinal properties to alcoholic beverages. Taking advantage of the opportunity, the young man from the north began to independently produce the nectars, using the same artisanal processes, in a small factory.
But the name Licor Beirão is no coincidence. In 1929, a Beirão Congress was held in Castelo Branco, and the liqueur was named in honor of the event. The difficulties brought about by World War II led to the factory being sold in 1940 to a young man born in Lousã, José Carranca Redondo, who had worked there for some time. In his early twenties, and married in the meantime, he decided to invest his savings, buying the house and the secret, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to the liqueur, which was then produced by his wife. Since then, sales have continued to grow, making it a very successful liqueur today.
Currently, Licor Beirão is produced at Quinta do Meiral in Lousã (Coimbra district, Portugal). With over 12 hectares, some of the aromatic seedlings and seeds used in its production are grown here, allowing for greater quality control. The remaining ingredients are imported from places as far away as India, Sri Lanka, Brazil, and Turkey, among others.
