Kopke's trajectory is intertwined with the history of its place. The Douro was destined to be the chosen amphitheater for this union between the will of man and nature.
In 1636, a journey between Hamburg and Portugal took place that would prove to be the root of a long history: Nicolau Köpke arrived in his new country as Consul General of the Hanseatic Cities.
Two years later, in 1638, he signed the first bottles of wine sent to Northern Europe.
The purchase of a farm in the Douro Valley in 1781 marks the transition from a buying company to a major wine producer.
Port wines gradually gained importance within the firm, quickly becoming its main business. Nicholas Kopke & Co. became an example of innovation, integrating wine production and trade within a single company.
In 1828, Cristiano Nicolau Kopkë, great-great-grandson of the company's founder, Nicolau Kopkë, and grandson of Cristiano Kopke, sided with the Liberal Party during the civil war, thus linking the company and the family to the cause.
This dedication to the concept of social progress will be shared by all successive generations of the family.
In 1836, Cristiano Nicolau Kopke was granted the title of Baron of Vilar. Ten years later, his nephew Joaquim Augusto Kopke received the title of Baron of Massarelos.
Two centuries after the family's arrival in Portugal, their commitment to the country's development has been rewarded.
The firm takes on the name CN Kopke.
Kopke, established in 1841, remains as such to this day.
The purchase of the S. Luiz Farm in 1922, almost three centuries after its creation, is like Kopke's arrival home.
This property, which has always been the choice of great connoisseurs of the Douro and Port wine, has been coveted for a long time. It becomes the focus, the model, and the jewel of all Kopke wine production.
In 1940, the Commercial and Industrial Association of Portugal signed a certificate recognizing the antiquity of CN Kopke, dating back to 1638.
