According to the "Books of the Inquisition," Walter Maynard was one of the first merchants to send Port wine to England in 1652. At the time, he was appointed Consul in the city of Porto by his brother Thomas, who held the position of English Council member in Lisbon by order of King Charles II. The family connection with the Van Zeller family is through his great-granddaughter, Dorothea Augusta Kopke.
