A story that takes us back to the year 1808.
During the second French invasion of Portugal, the people of what is now the Boticas region, fearing that their valuables would be looted, hid what they could, including the wine, which was buried in the floors of the cellars, under the barrels and wine presses.
Later, when they recovered their precious belongings, they discovered that the wine had acquired unusual properties. It was a wine with a low alcohol content and some effervescence, the result of natural fermentation during the time it was buried, and its preservation was aided by the constant temperature and absence of light. Because it had been buried, the wine was named Wine of the Dead. The tradition continues to this day, a living history of the village of Boticas.
