In 1892 it was announced that the final route of the Highland Railway would pass through Tomatin. With this, local resident John MacDougall, born and raised in Tomatin, began planning his distillery. The Tomatin Spey District Distillery was registered on June 8, 1897, but unfortunately it closed in 1906.
Fortunately, the company was bought by experienced wine and spirits merchants and reopened as New Tomatin Distillers Company Ltd. in 1909, bringing the distillery back into operation with 2 stills capable of producing 225,000 liters of alcohol per year.
But the closure of Tomatin in 1985 stood out from the rest. Most distilleries that closed at this time were considered inefficient or outdated. Tomatin was not only the largest and most efficient malt distillery in Scotland, but it was also packed with cutting-edge technology.
As a result, it didn't remain closed for long, and in February 1986, two Japanese companies, Takara Shuzo and Okura & Co., bought the distillery to form Tomatin Distillery Co. Ltd., of which Takara Shuzo remains the majority shareholder to this day.
The decision was made to remove some of our unused stills, reducing the total number from 23 to 12 (which remain in situ today), marking a shift in business focus from mass production for the blended Scotch whisky market to growing our range of single malts.
Recognizing the excellent quality of our lightly peated single malt, which we have produced for one week each year since 2005, the Cù Bòcan single malt brand was launched. Focusing on unconventional barrel aging, this brand has been gaining strength.
A change in packaging and a new marketing style allowed the Tomatin Single Malt brand to truly shine and more accurately reflect its well-deserved place in the competitive whisky market. With a first-class wood policy, Tomatin has become known for taking whisky lovers on an inimitable journey of aging and maturation in barrels, each brimming with unique flavor and characteristics, while showcasing the classic Tomatin house style: unpeated, light, smooth, and fruity.
The world has been through a lot in recent years, and we continue to face uncertainty and anxiety. But with the unity we've seen from our partners around the world, the dedication of our team, and the growing support of our loyal customers, we are reminded of what truly matters. Our people matter. Our community matters. Our product matters. So we raise a toast to you from Tomatin. To what matters.
